The Life and Times of the  HC Lindhout Family


Hendrik Cornelis Lindhout, the son of Pieter Lindhout and Johanna Van Doorn Lindhout,  was born  the 3rd of January 1875 in Noordwijk Binnen, Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands.


HC Lindhout became a noted baker, operating the Lindhout Bakerij, in Noordwijk Binnen.


His future wife, Aartje Barnhoorn (the eldest daughter of Pieter Floriszn Barnhoorn and Neeltje vanden Haak) was born 22 September 1879 . They met...... and were married 22 April 1899 in Noordwijk Binnen The Netherlands.


The marriage of Hendrik and Aartje was blessed with twelve children.


Their first child, Pieter Lindhout was born 24 February 1900.  Consistent with the Dutch patronymic custom Pieter was named after his paternal grandfather, also named Pieter Lindhout (b. 1834 d. 1920).

  1. -Pieter Lindhout married Magdalena Middelburg on 11 August 1926 and this union produced nine children born between the years of 1927 and 1944.


  1. -Pieter Lindhout died in 1979 at an age of 79 years.


Their second child, and first daughter, Neeltje Lindhout, was born 23 November 1901 in Noordwijk.  Neeltje;

    - was named in honour of her maternal grandmother Neeltje vanden Haak (b. 1854 d. 1926)

    - married Pieter Plug,  of Noordwijk aan Zee, on 19 February 1929

        ..and this union produced six children born between 1930 and 1941.

    - emigrated to Sarnia Ontario Canada, with her husband and six children in June 1947

    - died in Sarnia Canada in October 1979 at an age of 76 years.


Pieter Hendrik Lindhout was born 26 May 1903 and he lived almost 96 years until he died in February 1999.


Johannes Lindhout was born 30 September 1904 and passed in 1935.


Johanna Lindhout was born 14 November 1906 and married Pieter van Duin in March 1927.  This mariage produced nine children and Johanna lived nearly 93 years before passing away in May 1999.


Pieter Floris Lindhout was born 7 September 1908 and was named after both his maternal grandfather (Pieter Floriszoon Barnhoorn b. 1850 d. 1931) and maternal great grandfather (Floris Barnhoorn b. 1821 d. 1876). Pieter Floris Lindhout passed away in 1979.


Wilhelmina (Mien) Lindhout was born 7 December 1909.

  1. -On 6 January 1943, in the middle of the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands during World War II, Mien Lindhout married Cornelis Van Alten, of Hoek ZH. This marriage produced seven children born between 1943 and 1955.

  2. -In July 1947, Cor and Mien Van Alten emigrated to Canada.

  3. -The first three children (of their seven) were born in The Netherlands and four were born in Canada.


Grietje Lindhout was born on Valentine’s Day (14 February) 1912.  She married Cor Meiog xx xxx xxxx and they had three children born between


Pieternella Lindhout was born 13 September 1913 and she lived in The Netherlands until her passing in 1970.


Johannes Hendrik Lindhout was born in 1915 and died in infancy, the same year.


Artje Hendrika Cornelia Lindhout was born 22 September 1916 and was named after both of her parents (Hendrik Cornelis Lindhout and Artje Barnhoorn Lindhout).

  1. -Artje Lindhout married Gees Burger, of Leiden, on 6 January 1943. This union produced four children with the youngest child born in 1953.


Florina Lindhout was born 12 March 1920 in Noordwijk.

- Florina married Ger Wijling on 4 August 1943 and together they had four children born between 1944 and 1958.


Hendrik Cornelis and Artje Lindhout celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary together in April 1959.


Hendrik Cornelis Lindhout passed away shortly after their 60th anniversary on 28 December 1960. His life of more than 85 years spanned two centuries and ten different decades. He was survived by his wife, ten of his twelve children, thirty eight grandchildren and more than twenty five great grandchildren.


Artje Barnhoorn Lindhout lived another seven and a half years passing away 4 June 1968, just short of her 89th birthday.


Together, during their lives Hendrik Cornelis and Artje experienced much.


  1. -Three monarchs served as Heads of State of The Netherlands. Hendrik Cornelis and Artje lived during the reign of the last king (until HC’s passing in 1960) of The Netherlands; King Willem III. They also lived during the reigns of Willem III’s daughter and grand daughter; Queens Wilhelmina and Juliana respectively.


  1. -Hendrik Cornelis and Artje were alive, and old enough to remember when Luxemburg established itself as an independent country separating itself from The Netherlands after the death of King Willem III.


  1. -During their lifetimes universal suffrage (the right to vote) was extended to include all men (not just the rich) in 1917 and women (in 1919).


  1. -They survived the Great Depression that swept the world, and hit The Netherlands particularly hard during the 1930’s.


  1. -Hendrik Cornelis and Artje also survived the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands during World War II. For five years, from May 1940 when German forces overran Dutch defenses until May 1945 when Allied troops, led by the Canadian Army liberated their country, Hendrik Cornelis and Artje suffered as did their country men.


  1. - Shortly after the conclusion of WWII they saw great migrations that affected The Netherlands tremendously.

     .. First for more than 10 years from 1947 until almost 1960 they saw massive emigrations from The Netherlands to new lives in Canada, USA and Australia for many Dutch citiznes. Indeed two of their children (Neeltje and Wihlemina) and their repsective famiilies chose to move to Canada in July 1947.

     .. Second, the decolonization of former Dutch colonies following WWII saw large influxes of people into The Netherlands from places such as Indonesia and Suriname. The Netherlands, which had always had a very diverse society and population became even more diverse.


  1. -During their lifetimes Hendrik Cornelis and Artje saw the introduction of so many of the things that define today’s world; cars, radio, airplanes, television, telephones and the European Union.
